Vetting of people who work with children to be extended

08/11/2005 - 15:51:02
The Minister for Education Mary Hanafin said today it was her intention to extend the vetting of people who work with children to a wider category of persons.

The Minister told the Dáil that the vetting of people on school boards of management should be based on vigilance.

She said the department had to be mindful about discouraging people from volunteerism.

Mary Hanafin said the level of vetting would be increased in the next couple of weeks.

“Vetting will be extended to include all persons working with children and with vulnerable adults,” she said.

“This will include teachers, caretakers, bus drivers and others who are working with children.

“We'll be able to start that immediately once extra resources and staffing are put in place which I understand will be the middle of this month.”
