Farmers mount Dáil protest against EU tariff proposals
08/11/2005 - 12:23:17Thousands of farmers from across the country have gathered outside the Dáil to protest against EU plans to allow more meat imports from abroad.
The farmers have accused EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson of exceeding his mandate by proposing to cut EU import tariffs by up to 46% in world trade talks.
Farming groups have claimed such a measure would destroy the livelihoods of thousands of farmers and are demanding help from the Taoiseach.
