Competition Authority welcomes repeal of Groceries Order
The Competition Authority has welcomed the announcement by Minister Micheál Martin that the Government intends to remove the Groceries Order.
In its submission to the Minister for Enterprise, Trade & Employment, the Competition Authority pointed out that Ireland has become one of the most expensive countries in the Euro-zone for food shopping.
According to Declan Purcell, Director of the Advocacy Division: "The Competition Authority is delighted that the Government has taken this opportunity to remove one of the most anti-consumer and protectionist devices from the Irish statute book.
"The Groceries Order pushes up food prices in Ireland, and is against the interest of consumers and the economy.
"The successful prosecution of two supermarkets in January 2004 for providing discounts on baby food is a perfect example of why the Groceries Order needs to be abolished. If this logic was applied in other sectors it would make cheap airline tickets and post-Christmas sales a criminal activity."
