Gillingham fall foul off non-league team in FA Cup
Unibond League Burscough snatched a dramatic injury-time winner to knock League One Gillingham out of the FA Cup and secure a place in the second round.
The 2003 FA Trophy winners claimed a famous league scalp, while non-league Weymouth and Harrogate just fell short to draw against Nottingham Forest and Torquay respectively.
Karl Bell put Burscough ahead 10 minutes in and they held the lead until the 58th minute when Matthew Jarvis levelled for the Gills. A wild lunge by Gillingham player Michael Flynn saw him sent off but the Football League side still took the lead through Mark Saunders with 14 minutes left at Victoria Park.
However, Derek Goulding’s team equalised thanks to Ian Cox’s own goal. Their dreams came true nearly three minutes into injury time when David Rowan turned and shot to put the ball beyond Tony Bullock and snatch a famous victory.
Forest appeared to be in control when Gary Holt gave them a slender half-time lead, heading home Nicky Southall’s cross after 39 minutes.
But Andy Harris was perfectly placed to equalise for the Terras and secure a replay at the Wessex Stadium.
Harrogate were on course to humiliate Torquay at Plainmoor after Danny Holland volleyed home from outside the area after 20 minutes.
But with 10 minutes to go Ian Stonebridge spared his side’s blushes to secure a second chance for Torquay, who currently sit rock bottom of League Two.
