NIB to make last-ditch attempt to avert postal strike
The National Implementation Body (NIB) is expected to call both sides in the An Post dispute to further talks today in a last-ditch effort to avert strike action at the company.
The Communications Workers Union is planning to take action in pursuit of pay rises due under the Sustaining Progress agreement. Its strike notice is due to expire tonight.
The Labour Court has ruled that the wage rises should be linked to reform of work practices.
However, the CWU rejects this on the grounds that the Sustaining Progress increases were designed to meet the rising cost of living and were not supposed to be linked to productivity.
The NIB, which was set up to oversee compliance with social partnership deals, met both sides for "exploratory talks" for the second time in a week last night, but no progress was reported.
The CWU is due to outline details of its planned industrial action later today, with postal services set to be disrupted from Monday unless a last-minute breakthrough is achieved.
