Man due in court charged with £26m Belfast bank heist

04/11/2005 - 08:24:33
A 23-year-old man is due in court in Belfast today charged with carrying out last year's £26.5m (€39m) robbery at Northern Bank headquarters in the city.

The man is charged with involvement in the robbery, as well as possessing a firearm or imitation firearm with intent to commit an offence and falsely imprisoning a bank worker and his wife.

The accused is one of five men arrested in Co Down and Co Tyrone this week in connection with last December's heist.

One of the five was released without charge last night, while another is believed to be a senior figure in the republican movement.

Speaking about the developments yesterday, PSNI chief constable Hugh Orde said the investigation was still on-going and he was hopeful of making further arrests.
