Poor hygiene in half of hospitals

Almost half of all acute hospitals have poor hygiene standards, a Health Service audit revealed today.

Only 9% of 54 hospitals examined by the Hygiene Audit, were found to have a good standard of cleanliness, while 43% were classed as fair and 48% were considered to have poor hygiene, the study revealed.

Following the audit the National Hospitals Office of the Health Service Executive pledged to introduce new national standards as well as a €20m capital grant to improve hygiene in hospitals.
