Paris: 12 arrests in fifth night of unrest
Police made 12 arrests and an officer was slightly injured in a fifth night of unrest in a Paris suburb where cars and rubbish were again set alight.
French law-and-order Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy also faced mounting criticism for his handling of the rioting in the north-eastern Paris suburb of Clichy-Sous-Bois, triggered by the deaths on Thursday of two teenagers, aged 15 and 17, accidentally electrocuted as they hid from police in a power substation.
Police arrested 12 people last night for damaging property or for carrying weapons and flammable materials, officials said, although they also added that the situation was calmer than in previous nights, with 400 police officers mobilised.
A projectile slightly injured an officer’s hand. At least 11 cars and three rubbish containers were set alight.
