Supporters of assault accused picket Belfast office

Supporters of a Belfast man facing a retrial for alleged assault have mounted a picket outside the offices of the Public Prosecutor in the city today.

The protestors are seeking the dismissal of charges against 28-year-old Kevin Milnes, who was jailed for nine months a year ago after admitting causing grievous bodily harm to a teenager he thought was stealing his girlfriend's car.

He pleaded guilty to assaulting the 15-year-old, but later secured a retrial after saying he had been wrongly advised by his lawyers.

His supporters claim he was defending himself against a would-be car thief who had attacked him with a screwdriver.
