Business group attacks CWU over An Post strike plans

01/11/2005 - 13:35:31
The Irish Small and Medium Enterprises Association has attacked the Communications Workers Union over its plans to take strike action at An Post.

The CWU is planning to mount industrial action on Friday in pursuit of pay rises due to its members under the Sustaining Progress deal.

The Labour Court has ruled that the pay rises should be linked to reform of work practices.

However, the workers reject this on the grounds that the Sustaining Progress increases were designed to meet rises in the cost of living and were not supposed to be linked to productivity.

ISME said today that it believed An Post management was doing its best to keep the company afloat, but the CWU was acting unreasonably.

Spokesman Mark Fielding said the Government should intervene and "talk sense to the unions".
