An Post calls on workers to abandon strike plans

01/11/2005 - 11:39:42
An Post has called on its workers to drop their planned strike action in pursuit of outstanding pay increases.

The Communications Workers Union is planning to take strike action from Friday due to the company's refusal to pay wage rises due under the Sustaining Progress agreement.

The Labour Court has ruled that the increases should be linked to reform of work practices.

However, the CWU has rejected this, saying the Sustaining Progress pay rises are designed to offset increases in the cost of living and are supposed to be paid without conditions.

An Post spokesperson Anna McHugh today welcomed moves by the Government to broker fresh talks on the matter and called on the workers to abandon their strike plans.

"It will achieve nothing, it's hugely irresponsible and will only serve to damage An Post's business," she said.
