Govt warned against chequebook economics' for next Budget

The Small Firms Association has published its view of the economy for the months ahead.

Business prospects in many sectors are said to be flat, due mainly to industrialising countries that have lower costs than Ireland.

They are optimistic about winter’s economic forecast provided that oil conditions stabilise, saying that the VAT impact on petrol increases will mean a net gain of €100m to the exchequer.

But they warn that Irish businesses are being hammered by the energy price increases and the Government must strike a balance for the good of the economy.

SFA Director Pat Delany has also warned the Government against “chequebook economics” in matters like childcare, health social welfare.
