Competitor set to enter rail freight business

It has been reported that a private sector operator is planning to enter the rail freight business here, providing competition to Irish Rail.

The cross-border market will be opened up to competition from next January, while the domestic market will open in January of 2007.

The identity of the rail freight operator remains undisclosed but there is widespread speculation that it is a large UK operator.

The Irish Exporters Association has been urging the Government to encourage competition in the rail freight business.
