Preisident Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made the declaration and, despite early signs that Iran was attempting to defuse the storm of protest, subsequently stood by his remark.
The UN has issued a statement condemning the remarks with Kofi Anan expressing his "dismay" at the Iranian leader's stance.
President Ahmadinejad repeated the call for the destruction of the Jewish state during nationwide protests in Iran yesterday.
The 47-year-old former Mayor of Tehran joined more than a million people who flooded the streets of the capital, some of whom carried placards reading "Death to Israel, death to America".
