Gardaí launch operation to save lives on roads over long weekend

Gardaí today warned drivers to especially careful if taking to the roads this Bank Holiday Weekend.

Officers will be out in force monitoring accident blackspots across the country, clamping down on drink driving, the non-wearing of seat belts and speeding.

There will be a particular emphasis on drink driving in the weekend’s operations. There has been a sharp increase the number of people arrested for drinking driving this year, with reported incidents up 15%.

Nine people were killed over the October Bank Holiday weekend last year.
