Spanish fishermen end blockades
27/10/2005 - 11:15:55Spain’s fisheries department today signed an agreement over fuel subsidies with fishermen who have blocked many ports across the country for the past four days.
The agreement came after 20 hours of talks at the ministry’s headquarters in Madrid.
Details of the agreement were not immediately available, said Cadena SER radio.
Earlier, the government had offered a subsidy of 9c per litre of diesel used, up from the 6c they currently receive.
The protest had led to the blockade of major ports including Barcelona, Bilbao and Valencia, seriously affecting ferry and cargo traffic.
