Lloyd into Citywest quarter-final
Defending champion Colin Lloyd raced into the quarter-finals of the Sky Bet World Grand Prix with an emphatic victory over Wes Newton at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin last night.
Newton was never in the hunt against the world number one, as the Essex thrower rapped the win up in less than 45 minutes.
But Lloyd said he was not happy with his performance.
"It was a good win but I'm a little bit disappointed because I struggled in the first round and struggled again," he said. "I've been playing a lot better than that and it's annoying. But I've got to step it up now and hopefully it will come.
Lloyd was joined in the last eight by Wayne Mardle, who defeated Alex Roy 3-1 in the evening’s final match.
Former World Champion Dennis Priestley had earlier ended the hopes of Irish favourite Keith Rooney with a nail-biting final leg victory, whilst Steve Beaton, a semi-finalist last year, eased past Gary Welding despite losing the first set.
The second round concludes on Thursday, starting at 6pm, with Peter Manley v John Magowan, Ronnie Baxter v Dennis Smith, Phil Taylor v Andy Jenkins and Kevin Painter v Mark Dudbridge.
