Vetting of childcare professionals 'is necessary'
27/10/2005 - 08:43:02A group representing men who work with young children has called for the early introduction of full vetting procedures in the childcare sector in the wake of proposals for new legislation following the Ferns report.
Members of "Men in Childcare" are meeting in Dublin today for their annual conference.
Just one per cent of those who work in the childcare sector in Ireland are men.
Spokesperson Jan Pettersen says it would be to everyone's benefit to have more stringent checks in place for those working with young people.
“I can’t for the life of me understand why the Government is not moving towards a system of vetting childcare professionals, regardless of whether they are male or female and I think anyone working in the sector would be of the same sentiment,” he said.
