US drops plans to develop 'bunker buster' bombs
26/10/2005 - 15:14:53The United States has abandoning controversial plans to develop nuclear “bunker buster'' bombs.
A Republican senator revealed that funding for the warheads had been dropped at the request of America's Nuclear Security agency.
The warheads would have penetrated deeply buried targets, including those tunnelled into solid rock.
Critics had warned that developing a new kind of nuclear weapon would send the wrong signal to the world and spark a new arms race.
Scientists claimed that such a weapon could kill over one million people.
