Jesse Jackson urges mobilisation against Aids
26/10/2005 - 14:58:33US civil rights activist Jesse Jackson today urged South Africans to mobilise against the HIV/Aids pandemic just as they did against apartheid.
Jackson said he discussed the problem of Aids at a meeting with former President Nelson Mandela – an old ally in the human rights struggle.
“Young people dying of Aids need to capture the anti-apartheid spirit and turn it into the anti-Aids spirit,” he said in Johannesburg.
More than 6 million of South Africa’s 47 million population are infected with the HIV virus which is killing more than 600 people per day.
Jackson also said that he would encourage US companies who pulled out of South Africa during the era of racial segregation to invest in the nation again.
