Baros working on City date
Aston Villa striker Milan Baros is stepping up his bid to return to action in Monday’s Barclays Premiership encounter with Manchester City at Eastlands.
Baros, a £6m (€8.8m) summer signing from Liverpool, has been dogged by an Achilles problem since Villa’s 8-3 route of Wycombe in the Carling Cup last month.
Villa boss David O’Leary was angry with the Czech Republic for giving the player an injection, which allowed him to play in the recent World Cup qualifier with Holland, without consulting the club.
But now Baros is back in light training and Villa will assess at the weekend whether he can play a part against Stuart Pearce’s side.
Assistant manager Roy Aitken said: “We’ve got a little break until Monday and we are very hopeful that between now and then we will have two or three more players back in amongst it, including Milan Baros.
“Baros is into some light training. We will look at him between now and the weekend and see how he is. If he is fine he will push on Saturday and Sunday with a view to the game on Monday.”
Defender Aaron Hughes is expected to be available after missing the midweek 1-0 Carling Cup win over Burnley with a slight reaction to the hernia problem which required surgery.
Aitken said: “Aaron was more or less rested against Burnley. He had a little reaction because he came back quickly after his operation and he had played a couple of tough games.
“The manager felt it was best to rest him in midweek and let it settle down a little bit. We are very hopeful he will be available for Monday.”
O’Leary is slowly starting to get his squad up to strength with midfielder Gavin McCann and defender Mark Delaney completing 90 minutes against the Clarets after respective knee injuries.
