New leads over murdered woman
Detectives were tonight investigating a series of leads in a bid to identify the body of a murdered woman.
The naked body of the middle-aged woman was found wrapped in a duvet, fastened with a piece of rope, at about 4.15am yesterday on the corner of Mercer Street and Aungier Place in Dublin’s city centre.
Detectives at Harcourt Square Garda station have received a large number of phone calls from the public about the possible identity of the woman since their appeal for information.
“There has been a good public response. There’s been calls coming in but as yet we haven’t identified the lady,” said an incident room spokesman.
Gardaí are also checking the missing persons files to identify the woman. She has been described as in her 50s, 5ft 7ins, of heavy build with long black hair going grey.
She had no particular identifying features, no possessions and was not wearing any jewellery. A post mortem showed she died of severe head injuries.
“We would appeal to anyone who knows anything to come forward, or anyone who has neighbours they haven’t seen for a period of time. The Harcourt Terrace Station number is 01 666 9500,” said the spokesman.
The scene at the top of Aungier Place lane was sealed off yesterday and the body covered by a large white and blue tent while a forensics team carried out investigations.
Superintendent PJ Brown, leading the murder investigation, has said he is confident the woman was killed elsewhere and dumped at the site some time between 2am and 4.15am.
