26/10/2005 - 14:07:06
A consignment of cocaine estimated to be worth over half a million euro, has been seized from a truck carrying equipment and costumes for the Opera Ireland company.

The truck, on its way to Dublin from Germany was one of four carrying equipment for an upcoming opera in the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin.

British Customs seized the cocaine at Dover port yesterday, which was reportedly stashed in one of theatre’s pieces of equipment.

The truck and its contents must now remain in Britain to be investigated by police and the driver has been arrested.

Director of Opera Ireland David Calopy, said he was shocked by the news and that it was the first time the company had ever come across an instance of smuggling.

He said they were now in a very difficult position because the theatre company needs the goods that remain impounded for their upcoming season.
