Proposition for women to be allowed take Japanese throne

A Japanese government panel will propose allowing women to ascend to the imperial throne, Kyodo News agency reported today.

The panel has been studying a possible change in Japanese law to avoid a succession crisis.

Japanese law currently only allows males to assume the throne, But the imperial family has not produced a male heir for 40 years, prompting calls to allow women to assume the crown.
