Scarlet going places
Scarlet Knight could be on his way to sunnier climes after justifying heavy market support in the Directory of The Turf Novice Stakes at Lingfield.
The son of Lujain was backed down from 14-1 to 7-1 in the six-furlong event and arrived full of running under Eddie Ahern to beat Prince Tamino by half a length.
Epsom-based trainer Philip Mitchell said: “He should come back here for a nursery in about a fortnight and then, if that goes well I shall try and persuade his owner to let him go to Dubai.
“I have always thought very highly of him and he is a promising individual.”
Saleem Golam crept to within one winner of Hayley Turner in the race for the apprentice jockeys’ championship with a double through John Robie and Miss Provvidence.
The former was only the youngster’s second ride for Gerard Butler, having finished third on the Blueberry trainer’s Green Lemon in the opener.
And it did not look good for John Robie, who dwelt badly in the stalls before division one of the Moorcroft Racehorse Welfare Centre Maiden Stakes.
But Golam was not fazed, keeping his cool and getting his mount settled to finish with a flourish and win by a length and a quarter on the 9-4 favourite from Burhaan.
Golam said: “He came out of the stalls sideways but I managed to get him organised.”
Miss Provvidence, handled by Walter Swinburn, triumphed by a short head in division two of the betfredpoker.com Maiden Stakes under another stylish performance from Golam.
The filly is owned by the nine-strong Double V Partnership and she picked up nicely.
In the closing Support Retraining of Racehorses Handicap, Golam partnered Dudley Docker for his boss Mark Tompkins, but could only finish fourth.
That event went to 8-1 shot Mina A Salem, handled by Clive Brittain and the third part of a Ryan Moore treble, which was initiated by Passion Rules and Night Crescendo. There was a length between Mina A Salem and Cross The Line at the post.
Passion Rules got up in the shadow of the post to deny favourite Ebert by a short head in the second division of the betfredpoker.com Maiden.
Trained by Mick Quinlan, the colt’s owner Joyce Moore (no relation to the rider), only got to the course five minutes before seeing Passion Rules score.
Night Crescendo battled through the rain to score on his first all-weather run in division one of the betfredpoker.com Maiden Auction Stakes.
The 6-4 market leader took the lead rounding the final bend to put the result beyond doubt.
The juvenile beat Bomber Command by three-quarters of a length, even though Moore lost his whip and had to ride out hands and heels, with Green Lemon three lengths away in third.
Mark Perrett, assistant to his wife and winning trainer Amanda, said: “That all went to plan, although he ran a bit green and pricked his ears.
“Now we have something to look forward to over the winter and he will be put away now.”
Humility was a shock 33-1 winner of division two of the Moorcroft Racehorse Welfare Centre Maiden for trainer Charles Cyzer, the filly scoring by a neck from Sincerely under a fine ride from Liam Keniry.
