Govt urged to develop policy here as bird flu spreads
It has been confirmed that a man who died in Indonesia has tested positive for bird flu, bringing the number of deaths in the country from the virus to four.
Meanwhile, China has reported a new outbreak of the avian flu, about two-thousand geese are thought to be affected in an eastern province of the country.
Officials there are saying it’s only a matter of time before the disease develops and becomes contagious amongst humans.
A blanket ban on the import of live birds into the European Union is expected to be agreed later today.
The Green Party has called for the government here to ban imports of wild and exotic birds after a parrot died from the virus in the UK.
The Green’s leader, Trevor Sargent said that it is not sufficient to allow the EU to dictate the pace or to prescribe the plans for Ireland.
He criticised the Government for not putting in place a detailed, individual policy here like other member states in the EU have done.
