Gold backing for Bruce

24/10/2005 - 08:59:05
Birmingham chairman David Gold has re-affirmed his backing for manager Steve Bruce and insisted: “I couldn’t pick a better man to get us out of this dilemma.”

Blues are still in the bottom three of the Barclays Premiership after Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Blackburn and now face a clash at home to Everton on Saturday which Gold claims is “critical”.

They are without a win in five games at St Andrews this season and Gold admitted everyone at the club was currently under pressure.

But he has again shown his faith in Bruce, who is approaching the fourth anniversary of his appointment as Trevor Francis’s successor.

Gold said: “It is a battle but, if I was going to pick a man to get us out of this dilemma, I couldn’t pick a better man than Steve Bruce.

“Steve and the staff and the players know we are in a difficult position. They know being in the bottom three is painful for the fans and the board and they know they’ve got a job to do.

“Steve takes this situation personally but we all know that one win can turn things around. You can go back to the Arsenal game when we could have taken a point. We were leading with a few minutes to go against Liverpool.

“We should have got a point against Villa and deserved one on the second half display against Charlton. Instead of being in bottom three we would be halfway up the table. We just need a couple of wins.

“We are all under pressure at the present time and we know we have a vital game against Everton next weekend but if we can just get that one victory, we can use it as a springboard to get out of the current situation.”
