SIPTU likely to avoid wage agreement talks

24/10/2005 - 07:24:00
SIPTU has said it wants more specific commitments from the Government that Irish workers will not be replaced with cheaper labourers from abroad, before they enter into talks on a new national wage agreement.

The calls come after the Irish Ferries dispute, when more than 500 workers were asked to sign a redundancy package so foreign workers could take over their roles in a cost-cutting effort.

Four hundred members of the worker’s union are gathering this morning to decide which way to vote at the Irish Congress of Trade Union’s wage conference tomorrow.

SIPTU will decide not to enter the talks after today’s meeting.

Ireland’s third largest union MANDATE decided not to enter national wage agreement talks a few weeks ago, but said they will pursue their own negotiations with employers.
