Liam Lawlor inquest to open in Moscow
Russian authorities have said the inquest into the death of the late Liam Lawlor will open later today.
The 61-year-old former Fianna Fáil TD was killed in a car crash on a main highway about 20 kms outside Moscow in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Diplomatic sources have stated the woman, who was a back-seat passenger in the car at the time, was a Ukrainian national in her late twenties or early thirties, and was working as a legal assistant and interpreter for Mr Lawlor.
His body is due to be released to his family after the inquest today to be brought home, with the funeral expected to take place on Thursday.
Mr Lawlor was due to give evidence in at least nine separate hearings of the Mahon Tribunal into allegations of corruption in Dublin planning.
His death is not likely to prevent the start of next month’s hearing into the rezoning of lands at Quarryvale in Dublin.
