Junior doctors complain of bullying at work

23/10/2005 - 09:54:22
A new survey has revealed that many medical trainees claim to have experienced physical, as well as verbal abuse.

The study, which is to be published in the Irish Medical Journal, raises serious questions about the relationships between junior doctors and the senior staff they train under.

A third of those questioned say they have been abused and ridiculed by consultants and senior nursing staff in front of patients.

They claim that undue pressure to produce work is the main source of this bullying, with discrimination on grounds of race and gender on top of the list of complaints.

Junior doctors report the abuse is affecting their performance and productivity at work, as well as impacting their home life.

Most would not make an official complaint because of fears that it would damage their careers.
