GRA welcomes non-national interest in garda vacancies
22/10/2005 - 12:10:25The Garda Representative Association (GRA) says it is crucial the Gardaí establish a cultural know-how in order to effectively police our changing society.
The association’s comments come as more than 800 non-nationals apply to join the Gardaí. Chinese nationals make up the vast majority of prospective recruits with 680 applicants from the Chinese community here.
The Justice Minister appealed to foreign nationals to consider a career in the Gardaí after he changed entry requirements and made it easier for immigrants to sign up.
Knowledge of the Irish language is no longer a prerequisite for joining, recruits will instead learn to speak it as part of their training.
