Google profits jump seven-fold

21/10/2005 - 08:26:12
Internet search giant Google saw its third-quarter profits jump seven-fold from a year ago to $381.2m (€316.5m) as revenues nearly doubled.

Google - which is based in California but has its European HQ in Dublin - saw net profits surge from $52m (€43.2m) from the same time last year.

Revenues in the third quarter hit a record $1.6bn (€1.3bn), up 96% from a year ago and 14% over the prior quarter.

Excluding commissions it pays to partners for directing traffic to Google, the company had sales of $1.05bn (€872m), topping analysts' estimates of $942m (€782m).

"Growth since last quarter was driven by the continued expansion of our global advertiser base and partner network, as well as by product improvements, and more than offset the expected seasonal slowdown in traffic," Google said.

Google recently launched its Google Earth satellite image programme and Google Talk, which allows instant messaging and internet telephony. Google is also proposing to set up a free wireless internet service for San Francisco.
