Murphy moves up to third in Mallorca
Ireland's Gary Murphy is tied in third place at the Mallorca Classic, at -3 after 15 holes.
Damien McGrane was faring less well, two over after 15.
Meanwhile, six days after producing a round of 60 in the Madrid Open Spaniard Ivo Giner was off to a flying start in the €1.8m Mallorca Classic at Pula today.
Giner, who needed to finish second to earn a place on the European tour for next season, outshone compatriots Jose Maria Olazabal and Miguel Angel Jimenez with five birdies in his first seven holes.
The 29-year-old from Barcelona also had a bogey in that spell, however, and so at four under par shared the lead with English pair Mark Foster and Miles Tunnicliff.
Jimenez, winner of the title two years ago, stood three under after eight, but then dropped shots at the 18th and third, while playing partner Olazabal, who is in the process of re-designing the course, set off with a bogey six and with six to play was two over.
Defending champion Sergio Garcia was among the later starters, as was Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam, but Scot David Drysdale was left wishing he could begin all over again.
In the first group off Drysdale slumped to eight over and last place in what was a hugely important week for the 30-year-old.
He flew to the island in the Order of Merit hot seat of 116th, the final position for retaining a card on Sunday night.
There was good news before he teed off in that Australian Mark Hensby had withdrawn from next week’s Volvo Masters and so was taken off the money list because he will not have played the 11 events required for inclusion.
