'Above average' heart disease death rate in Ireland

New figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) have revealed that Ireland has an above-average rate of premature deaths from heart disease.

Thirty-eight per cent of deaths in 2004 were as a result of cardiovascular disease, while just over 25% were cancer-related.

Doctors say even very healthy people could be at risk from high cholesterol because it is genetic, but they say it is still vital that exercise and a balanced diet are part of everyone’s lifestyle.
