French police recover five babies sold by mothers

18/10/2005 - 14:37:23
French police recovered five babies allegedly sold for up to €6,000 by their mothers to couples without children.

Police said the babies, aged about one, were in good health and had not been mistreated. Several couples were in custody.

Investigators from a police office against human trafficking recovered the infants in raids in the Paris region and in Brittany.

They were found in camps set up by travellers, police said.

Childless couples from the travellers’ community allegedly bought the babies.

The investigation was opened in 2004 when a Bulgarian woman, who sold her baby but then was filled with remorse, alerted authorities.
