Ferguson stresses Keane's vital role
Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson has admitted he wants Roy Keane in his midfield “for as long as he can get his boots on”.
Ferguson has not given up hope of persuading Keane to stay at United beyond the summer, even though the veteran Irishman has hinted this season will be his last at the club.
Mixed messages came out of the Red Devils camp at the weekend with Ferguson following up an initial belief Keane may remain at Old Trafford with a claim that United would not be rushed into offering the 34-year-old a new contract.
Although Keane is currently sidelined with a broken foot, his dressing room influence remains huge and he is currently guiding Alan Smith through the formative stages of his transition from striker to midfielder.
After altering his side’s formation to extend Keane’s career, Ferguson will not let his talisman leave United without a fight.
“I made the change to play three in the centre of midfield so we could retain Roy’s vision and great influence, which is so vital to the present-day side,” said Ferguson.
