New storm heading for US
17/10/2005 - 17:19:56A new tropical storm has formed in the Caribbean, equalling the record for the most storms formed in the Atlantic in one season.
Tropical Storm Wilma is expected to become a hurricane before heading towards the battered US Gulf coast at the weekend.
The 21st named storm of the season has exhausted the official list of names and is feared to pose a significant threat to the US mainland.
Greg Romano, director of public affairs at the National Weather Service headquarters, said it was too early to tell exactly where Wilma was headed.
"We are warning residents in Florida and along the Gulf coast to be wary and just keep an eye on developments," he said.
"It is moving slowly at the moment but is expected to strengthen within the next 24 hours."
