Purcell strike gives Waterford a boost

Pat Purcell gave Waterford’s season a huge lift with a stoppage time winner.

The big defender arrived to head home Colm Heffernan’s corner three minutes into added time to break UCD’s hearts after they had come back from 2-0 down.

The match was delayed for 45 minutes after the FAI neglected to appoint match officials and had to rush them to the ground when the mistake was realised.

It scarcely upset the Blues who were 2-0 up inside 13 minutes.

Heffernan drilled home the opener within two minutes before Kevin Waters added the second, also with a low drive from just outside the area.

Blues keeper Packie Holden then saved Robbie Martin’s 30th minute penalty as it looked like it wasn’t to be UCD’s night.

The match appeared to swing UCD’s way in the second half.

Pat McWalter shot them back into on 66 minutes before Anto Murphy rounded Holden to slot home the equaliser four minutes later - all to no avail.

If Blues can beat St. Pat’s at the RSC on Friday, they will leapfrog over them out of the bottom two.
