Bowyer injury relief for Souness

17/10/2005 - 16:55:45
Newcastle boss Graeme Souness today received some better news when it emerged Lee Bowyer's knee injury is not as bad as was first thought.

The 28-year-old midfielder limped out of Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Wigan before half-time, but Souness is hopeful he could yet be fit for Sunday's derby clash with Sunderland.

"It's not as bad as we feared, but let's see how he goes in the next few days," he told the club's official website, www.nufc.co.uk.

"There's no great swelling on the knee, which is a good sign, so we are hoping it's not too serious."

Souness has spent much of the season to date attempting to plug holes in his expensively-assembled squad as injuries have ripped his plans apart.

Turkish international Emre returned as a substitute at Wigan after sitting out since August, but Albert Luque, Nolberto Solano, Kieron Dyer, Titus Bramble and Celestine Babayaro were all missing.
