Study: High level of attempted suicide among students

One in a hundred of secondary school students has tried to kill themselves, according to a study published today.

The new study, which has revealed the extent of attempted suicides among the under-18s, was carried out by the Mater Hospital in Dublin.

The Irish Association of Suicidology says urgent investment is needed to provide psychiatric services for 15 to 17-year-olds, for whom there are currently no such services available.

The head of the Association, Dan Neville, says the amount of money needed would be equivalent to the amount squandered on the HSE’s failed PPARS system.
