Traces of MRSA found at Coombe Women’s Hospital

13/10/2005 - 08:26:00
Traces of MRSA have reportedly been discovered at the Coombe Women's Hospital in Dublin.

Reports this morning said the so-called 'superbug' had been detected on medical equipment in the hospital's emergency room.

Yesterday, it emerged that the bacterium had also been detected on the skin of five newborn babies at Dublin's National Maternity Hospital.

However, the children had not fallen ill as MRSA is only dangerous when it infects the bloodstream or an open wound.

MRSA and other antibiotic-resistant bacteria have become a major problem in hospitals throughout the Western world in recent years.

Poor hygiene standards are frequently blamed for spreading the disease.
