September price increases push inflation rate up to 3%

13/10/2005 - 13:16:54
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has reported a sharp jump in Ireland's inflation rate during the month of September.

The CSO said average prices increased by 0.8% during the month, pushing the inflation rate up from 2.3% to 3%.

The increase was largely driven by rises in clothing and footwear prices following the end of the summer sales, along with increases in transport costs and the prices charged for miscellaneous goods and services.

Fine Gael has accused the Government of fuelling the problem by constantly increasing stealth taxes and other charges.

Party spokesman Richard Bruton said: "Irish price increases by Government in these areas are two and a half times what's happening in the rest of Europe."
