Quake tremors cause panic in Karachi

12/10/2005 - 07:25:34
A mild earthquake hit Pakistan’s southern city of Karachi, causing panic among residents but no injuries, an official said today.

Sarfraz Ahmad, an official at the meteorological department, said that the 4-magnitude quake late yesterday was centred about 1,100 683 miles south of Karachi.

He said that although mild quakes do not cause damage, residents in Karachi came out of their homes and apartments after feeling tremors, which came hours after a 5.1-magnitude quake rattled parts of south-western Pakistan, causing no damage or casualties.

The quake in Karachi and south-western Pakistan occurred three days after a 7.6-magnitude quake killed between 35,000 to 40,000 people in northwest Pakistan and the Himalayan territory of Kashmir, which is divided between Pakistan and India.
