Some England fans 'still high-risk'
A Dutch expert on football hooliganism believes England fans still represent a high security risk despite good behaviour at the last two major championships.
Henk Groenevelt, head of the Centraal Informatiepunt Voetbalvandlisme – a Dutch police organisation designed to combat football hooliganism, picked out England fans as one of several groups who could cause problems at next year’s World Cup.
He told BBC Radio Five Live: “I think the England supporters and the Germans and some eastern European countries, they can have a lot of high-risk supporters.”
Part of the problem facing the 2006 organisers, according to Groenevelt, is Germany’s position at the heart of Europe.
With nine international lands borders on top of the air and sea ports, troublemakers are more likely to travel to the tournament.
This is in contrast to Portugal, hosts of Euro 2004, where it was relatively easy to police points of entry while Japan and Korea, where the last World Cup was held, were out of reach for many fans.
