Robson reassures Carter

11/10/2005 - 10:19:25
Darren Carter has been told by West Brom manager Bryan Robson he has a major part to play this season despite his current lack of first team involvement.

Carter moved from Birmingham to the Hawthorns in the summer for £1.5m (€2.2m) in a bid to obtain the regular football which had eluded him.

But the midfielder has failed even to make the bench for the last three matches and his only Premiership appearances have been against Birmingham and Wigan – when he was taken off on both occasions.

The likes of Ronnie Wallwork, Andy Johnson and Richard Chaplow appear to be ahead of Carter in the pecking order but Robson has insisted he is in his plans.

Robson said: “Darren has done okay so far this season and put in a couple of solid performances.

"He is still very much in my thoughts at this time.

“Both he and Richard Chaplow are still learning the game to a certain degree and they know they can improve. But the one thing both of them are doing is working very hard on the training pitch, which I am pleased about

“Darren chats to myself and Nigel Pearson (assistant manager) a lot about his development because he wants to improve as a player. He has a real desire to get into the team and be a regular in there.”

Midfielder Zoltan Gera is a major doubt for Saturday’s home encounter with Arsenal because of a groin injury despite having an injection to try to ease the problem.

Robson said: “He has had a few injury problems and we need to get him settled down so he can play to his best. He is still nowhere near training yet.

“He has had an injection in his groin that we hope settles down towards the weekend, but he is very doubtful for Saturday.”

Robson is optimistic captain and striker Kevin Campbell will will have recovered from an ankle injury in time to face his former club on Saturday.
