Vast majority of elderly people want to live at home

The vast majority of elderly Irish people want to live independently in their own homes, according to a survey published today.

Eighty-five per cent of respondents said they wanted to continue living independently, with just 4% interested in going to a nursing home.

More than half of those questioned also identified burglary as their main concern in relation to crime, while 70% said they felt young people did not have the same respect for their elders as in the past.

The survey was commissioned by Emergency Response, a company that provides home-safety services to elderly people living alone.
