Book: Joel resorted to drinking furniture polish
11/10/2005 - 14:33:56It’s no secret that musician Billy Joel has battled the booze for years, but his troubles were tougher than anyone ever knew, according to a new book.
Hank Bordowitz reports in his new book, Billy Joel: The Life And Times Of An Angry Young Man, that Joel once drank furniture polish in a bid to end his life.
Joel apparently confessed: “I drank furniture polish… It looked tastier than bleach.”
Before he drank it, he wrote a suicide note that became the lyrics to Tomorrow Is Today.
The appalling episode was brought on by Joel’s despair over his affair with Elizabeth Small, the wife of his drummer.
