'Household waste collection market not working'
The Competition Authority has found that the market for household waste collection is not working well for consumers.
However, it found no breach of competition law, despite complaints against a company in County Wicklow.
A number of years ago, the authority got complaints that there was a lack of competition in household waste collection services in north east Wicklow, and that Greenstar was charging excessive prices.
The authority found that while the company had a dominant position, its prices were not significantly higher than those charged by other operators in the country, and in some cases were cheaper.
However, the authority said its extensive enquiries showed that the market was not working well for consumers.
It said international experience showed the best way of delivering goods services at a competitive price for consumers was to allow providers to compete side by side with each other.
Instead of a competition for the market, it says there should competition within the market.
