Asia quake casualties 'could be massive'
08/10/2005 - 12:32:31Up to 1,000 people are feared dead after a magnitude 7.6 earthquake jolted south Asia today, collapsing buildings and triggering landslides.
Several villages in northern Pakistan were buried in landslides triggered by the quake, said Maj. Gen. Shaukat Sultan, the Pakistani army's chief spokesman.
“The damage and casualties could be massive and it is a national tragedy,” Sultan said. “This is the worst earthquake in recent times.”
Pakistan’s Geo television reported that Sultan said 1,000 people were feared dead.
Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Sherpao said hundreds had been killed.
An army spokesman says several villages had been buried in landslides, and casualties could be “massive”.
