07/10/2005 - 18:29:29
Former Jordan Formula One racer Ralph Firman was one of the early pace-setters in the second practice session at the A1 Grand Prix at the Lausitzring in Germany.

Norfolk-born Firman, who drove in motor sport’s premier class in 2003, took Ireland to second in the early running, bettered only by the French car driven by Nicolas Lapierre who completed his fastest lap in one minute 34.150 seconds.

Britain’s Robbie Kerr finished sixth in 1:34.800 but demonstrated his ability by going fastest in first practice, while the winner of the inaugural race at Brands Hatch, Brazilian Nelson Piquet Jr, was down in ninth.

Germany’s Timo Scheider gave the home fans something to cheer as he took third while former F1 racer Jos Verstappen was fourth for Belgium.

Brazil lead the standings on 21 points after Piquet Jr’s race one success, with Australia and New Zealand close behind on 16 and 15 respectively.

Kerr and Lapierre will be aiming for strong races in Germany to boost their positions, with France in fifth and Great Britain sixth in the championship.
